You can leave moles alone as they are harmless. However, moles removal should be done if they develop into malignant melanoma which may grow into skin cancer that can be fatal if not removed. Typically, malignant moles are irregular in shape and pigmentation and are larger than a pencil eraser.
In addition, moles removal should be done if the blemish gets irritated by clothing, is an annoyance when combing your hair or shaving. The procedure can also be done for cosmetic purposes.
There are various methods for surgical moles removal. You should talk with your doctor or dermatologist about the procedure that will be used. To prepare for surgical moles removal, the doctor cleans and sterilizes the area which is to be removed and then applies an anesthetic to numb the area.
One way of moles removal is known as excision with stitches. The blemish and skin surrounding and underlying it are removed in the shape of an oval with a medical blade. The amount of area to be cut out depends on the condition of the nevus. If the cut is deep, then stitches will be needed underneath the skin. These stitches will get absorbed by the body and do not need to be physically removed. If the cut is not very deep, then the stitches will be placed on the upper surface and will need to be physically removed at a later time.

Another moles removal method is by cauterization which burns the problem away. This procedure requires no stitches.
Shaving is also used for moles removal but is not always the best method as it may leave some nevus cells beneath the skin which may enable it to grow back. A scalpel lifts and removes the blemish, leaving the area flush with the surrounding surface. The area is cauterized to stop bleeding followed by the application of a topical ointment to the wound to reduce the possibility of infection. The wound is then covered with a bandage.
Moles removal can also be done by a laser. No anesthesia is required and the laser produces a slight tingling of the skin. The laser seals the blood vessels and evaporates the tissues they remove. Therefore, stitches are not required and there is some reduction in scarring. After the laser surgery, a scab forms where the spot once was and it falls off within two weeks. There is some redness after the scab has fallen off which disappears within a few more weeks. The drawback to laser treatment is it typically takes several visits to the doctor or dermatologist to fully remove the nevus.
Following any moles removal surgery, it is recommended you wear loose clothing to prevent rubbing with the skin. You should also clean the area twice a day with water, apply an antibiotic ointment and then cover again with a bandage.
